Resumen del San Juan Cinemafest
Hace tiempo que no reseño películas. Quiero retomar las críticas de cine con un resumen de lo que vi en el Cinemafest.
1)El búfalo de la noche- Vi anuncios de esta película en el cine y me entusiasmó mucho. QUE DECEPCION. En un intento de hacerla impredecible, la historia tenía demasiadas lagunas y el libreto era flojo. Es una pena que un actor tan talentoso como Diego Luna desperdicie sus habilidades en un papel pobre que parece no tener intención ni motivación. Camila Sodi será muy linda pero su participación no aportó en lo absoluto en la historia. La peli no vale la pena a menos que quieras ligarte a Diego y las actrices, quienes se desnudan de principio a fin.
2)La misma luna- Graciosa, tierna y conmovedora es una comedia dramática familiar mezclada con un "road movie". Carlitos(Adrián Alonso)es un niño que no ve a su mamá hace cuatro años porque ésta emigró "al norte" para poder proveer mejor para él. Cuando la abuela muere, Carlitos se decide a cruzar la frontera para encontrarla. En esa travesía aprende todo lo que ella sufrió y lo mucho que hay que trabajar en "el norte". Adrián Alonso es un chico con un gran potencial, hay que observarlo.
3)Once- De Irlanda viene esta dulce, tierna pero sutil historia de amor entre dos personas que no pueden realizar su historia de amor, pero estarán unidos por la música, la cual es MARAVILLOSA. El protagonista, Glen Hansard, es el cantante de una banda llamada "The frames" considerada por algunos como la mejor banda que ha salido de Irlanda, por encima de U2. Si te gusta el rock acústico alternativo, te encantará la banda sonora de esta película. Si la viste, déjales un comentario en su blog
4)O casamento de Romeo e Julieta- Liviana y divertidísima comedia romántica brasileña con el fanatismo del futból como trasfondo. Mientras la familia de Julieta es "Palmeiras", Romeo es "Corintians". El amor puede superarlo todo, hasta el fanatismo deportivo.
5)Tuya´s Marriage- Es la dura historia de una mujer mongol que decide divorciarse de su marido para así conseguir a otro que pueda mantenerla a ella, sus hijos y al exmarido incapacitado. El hermoso paisaje de Mongolia picó mi curiosidad por visitar un lugar del casi nunca se oye en las noticias.
6) La edad de la peseta- Así se le conoce en Cuba al periodo de los 7 a 12 años, o lo que las teorías de piscología del desarrollo llaman periodo de latencia. En la historia se muestra la crueldad y confusión características de la edad. A esto se le suma que Oscar es hijo de una mujer divorciada, lo cual era un grave estigma en la Cuba batistiana antes de la revolución. La historia es aderezada por una abuela nada convencional, caracterizada por Dolores Sampietro, quien le enseña a Oscar su oficio de fotógrafa. La película muestra una excelente calidad de producción en el sonido, la dirección artística y la fotografía. Sin embargo, sentí que le faltó algo, no me conmovió como otras películas cubanas.
En resumen, el festival estuvo de lo más estimulante.

1) El Bufalo de la Noche: Edginess without a clue. You kinda go “huh?” after watching it. Not complaining about the pretty ladies, however.
2) La Misma Luna: Sweet little film with a different perspective regarding an important current subject matter, i.e. migrant workers and the lives they impact. The boy, “Carlitos” (Adrian Alonso), is a charmer and a natural. He should have a great career in acting if he decides to continue in the business. The father figure, “Enrique” (Eugenio Derbez), does an excellent job of playing off the boy and carrying off the air of fateful resignation that a migrant worker might have. The mom, “Rosario” (Kate del Castillo), is…well…ahh…umm…[drools].
This movie doesn’t try to push a heavy message. Instead the director decides to let the story speak for itself. I think it is immensely more successful this way. Only two minor quibbles with the film: (1) the lives of migrant workers and their journeys north usually aren’t as rosy as portrayed here, and (2) [minor spoiler alert] the boy’s meeting with his real father is contrived.
3) Once: Another sweet little film that touches your heart. Again, there’s not a big message to be delivered. Yet it leaves you with hope and happiness in the end. You think about chance meetings, opportunities, simply pleasures, crossed paths, and, again, hopefulness. The sound track is wonderful. It is basically a greatest hits collection of “The Frames” done acoustically. If you like the movie, definitely seek out the little tidbits about it on trivia sites such as IMDB for further insights. E.g. what does the “girl” say to the “boy” in Czech on top of the cliff that is left untranslated?

5) Tuya´s Marriage: A stereotypical movie from China goes like this – “Life is hard, and...well…it goes on. The End”. At least that’s how most of them can seem to be summarized. This is a well-acted movie with beautiful sceneries. Very apt portrayal of the “border life”, as life along the outer edges of China is sometimes known.
6) La Edad de la Peseta: If recent Chinese movies can be stereotyped as being about harsh lives, I suppose recent Cuban movies may be able to be stereotyped as being about lives before/during/after the revolution. :D While this is certainly a well-produced movie, the storyline itself is kind of aimless, and it doesn’t seem to get its points across as well as “La Misma Luna” or “Once” does. After watching it, you kind of go, “Well, that’s nice, but…?”
